Collaboration:  want to work on your product with Dr Montross?

Purpose:  Product development and consulting services. Helping people bring products to the market that make sense to the user.  Working with Intrepid Orthopedics, private engineers and other collaborative surgeons to help develop ideas, refine existing designs to bring them to life.

Many of Dr. Montross’s products have started on a napkin drawing. Using experienced engineering teams like Intrepid Orthopedics.  Your napkin drawings can be brought to life.

Vision:  Dr. Montross believes innovation should be driven by the surgeon.  Who knows better how a screw, plate or other device works than the surgeon putting it in?  Some devices are not as practical as we would like during use.  Some appear over engineered.  Other devices just need to be adjusted to better suit the surgical environment.  Currently Dr. Montross has patents in joint replacement, anchor devices and external fixation.  He has also applied for patents for ligament reconstruction, external fixation device, external fixation improvements and other fixation devices.  He was the principal designer of the Movement First MPJ replacement system currently in use by Smith Nephew.

Development today:  Currently many companies do less development.  They focus on acquiring established products or products near end of development.  This leaves little space for the innovative surgeon.  Some smaller companies do not have the capacity to develop products when they are working to sell their own products.  Many ideas never come to fruition.  Dr. Montross has established this company to start product development for sale or develop a product to sell to another company.

Ideas:  If you have an idea, please do not submit this without a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).  These are vital to protect your intellectual property.  You can send us information on what you have in mind.  If you have a special plate design you can mention this but not specifics.  Unfortunately, at this time we do not do total ankle joints or biologics.  Dr. Montross has several binders of development ideas that will never come to market.  Some of these ideas were an exploration of what could be developed but eventually many were not practical or could not be developed as envisioned.  If you would like to get my opinion on your projects current or past, we would be happy to have that conversation.

Contracting:  When contracting with a company be sure to have the contract reviewed by a lawyer familiar with product development.  Some contracts may lead you to believe the contracted royalty was at the top of sales.  If your royalty percentage is based after the reps and company are paid, you may be paid less than you think.  Other contracts may have a clause to sign over all of your ideas or a right of first refusal and leave very little bargaining power, etc...  Don’t worry about missing an opportunity with a bad contract and think you have to sign.  There are many companies looking and needing good intellectual property.
